Liz Law Jewelry in Ad in Seventeen

Apr 13

I was very excited to learn that my jewelry was used in photos for a full page hair color ad used in May’s issue of Seventeen Magazine. I styled all the jewelry on Kelly Eden for this shoot with photographer Jennifer Erickson. I love how Splat hair care uses the adjectives “extreme, shocking, expressive, beautiful” for their tag line. I don’t so much strive to be extreme and shocking, but expressive and beautiful are definitely key parameters within which I design.

Kelly wears my one-of-a-kind and sold out pieces “Heirloom” and “HerStory” on the left picture, along with the inline and available for purchase “Laced” piece draped every so elegantly across her chest. You can also make out “Coastal” laid out on the ground amongst all the little crystals. The fabulous image on the right features the “Slave” necklace and always popular “Classic Onyx” earrings (in fact I am wearing mine as I type!) which are both inline and available for purchase.

Celebrating Success of Educate's 1st Annual Ball for Uganda

Feb 17

Educate!, the Colorado and Uganda-based organization for which my Empower line was created, had their Annual Ball in Boulder last Saturday and raised over $25,000 for educational programs in Uganda. The money raised allows Educate! to empower the 830 students in 24 high schools across Uganda currently enrolled in the Educate! Experience, an innovative two-year curriculum focusing on social change, mentorship, and leadership that equips students with the skills and confidence necessary to transform their communities. I was happy to donate my always popular Olympus necklace for their silent auction, and Educate! members also sold some pieces from my Empower line at the event. I chose “Olympus” because it is a classic and beautiful piece (with of course the requisite dose of flavor and personality) that is very wearable and not too hard to pull off. Reflecting upon it now, I think it’s fitting that this necklace is comprised of gold and silver chains of all different designs and lengths that each unite at a common point- the beautiful golden leaf. I’m grateful that I can be a small link in the chain of goodwill towards a higher goal and purpose, simply by contributing something that I enjoy doing. Golden indeed.

Educate! Executive Director Eric Glustrom addresses the crowd.

Party-goers peruse the auction table. I’m loving this lady’s gorgeous flower.

Enjoying the evening.

Gem Session

Jan 26

I’ve spent a lot of time creating new pieces the last few days. My studio is filled with various beads, pendants, charms, chain, and material that I find interesting, beautiful, and inspiring. I create by spreading out on the floor with my supplies (and sometimes a co-conspirator!) and putting together different materials in various combinations until something interesting manifests. And that usually doesn’t take long. Usually building one piece will spark a bunch of ideas for other pieces. It’s actually very easy to get distracted. Focused creativity is very difficult, and in fact I wonder if its even an oxymoron. I’ll start with a general vision but the design process invariably takes me in different directions to produce a piece different than I could have ever imagined. Inspiration really is all around you and all within you. I’m always amazed at how many design directions I can go in for one piece, and how many different pieces are offshoots of one initial concept. The possibilities are endless to the point that it’s at times overwhelming. However, amidst this chaos I managed to create some fantastic new pieces, if I do say so myself.. ;) I even made a few bracelets lately. As always, don’t be shy to email me at jewelry@bylizlaw.com for a sneak preview or special request. For the more timid, I’ll be taking pictures and posting new pieces on the site over the next few weeks.

Christmas in Richmond 2009: Snow, Jewelry Party, and handmade Ornaments

Dec 27

So I’m winding down my week long Christmas stay in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia.  It’s been a nice visit of catching up with old friends and relatives and seeing a rare snow sighting. (We got over a foot right before I got here!)

My mom hosted a jewelry party for me at my parents’ house on Tuesday.  It’s actually the fourth annual one, and it’s become quite a tradition!  A lot of ladies braved the icy roads and made it over to the house for socializing, apps and wine, jewelry, and some Christmas cheer.  Another successful trunk show.  Thanks, Mom!  :)

Me with my mom’s good tennis friend and loyal customer, Jane, right before the show.

Me with my good friend Rebecca. I’ve known her all my life, as we lived next door to each other growing up. She was the receipient of my very first pair of earrings, as her mom bought my first pair ever and gifted them to her. Here she tries on just one “Ice Queen” earring with price tag attached. She ended up buying these and I am confident that, going forward, she will wear the full pair sans price tag.

My favorite gift this year was some ornaments that my mom made.  People always say I’m tough to shop for, in part because I never know what I want so can never really help people out with suggestions, but this year I thought it’d be nice to get something handmade from my incredibly artistic mother.  She took that suggestion to heart and suprised my sister and me with 8 handmade ornaments each.  She used various techniques to paint ball ornaments in different interesting ways, and then for the coup de gras she took a page from my book and decorated the balls with various elements from repurposed jewelry.  My very favorite has a pink yarn on top and a beautiful rhinestone brooch that used to be my grandmothers and somehow managed to evade me, otherwise it would surely have been reincarnated as a necklace rather than an ornament.  For another one she glued a silver snail pin that my dad gave me for Christmas years and years ago to the ornament.  Another had a gold monnogram charm of my initials from a necklace that I haven’t worn in years.  Another had a silver tennis racket on it since I used to be a pretty competitive tennis player.  I recognized some old jewelry from the 80’s my mom used to wear on another one of them.  You get the idea; they were all beautiful and peppered with these meaningful little tokens.  I was SO excited about these ornaments… and am thinking about making some myself next year to sell at shows around the holidays and maybe even on my website.  I’ve got a while to think about that, but in the meantime, enjoy some pics below of this year’s ornaments.
